DTEES OPERATING ENGINEER UC- BERKELEY

General Summary

This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of all energy-related assets located within a central powerhouse complex at the University of California Berkeley Campus. Utility (Steam) systems and powerhouse infrastructure experience is required. 

Assets include (1) GE LM 2500 Combustion Turbine rated at 26 MW, (1) Terry Steam Turbine rated at 5 MW, (1) Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) operating at 165,000 lbs/hr at 600 PSI, (3) Steam Boilers rated at 100,000 lbs/hr operating at 125 PSI, (4) Reverse Osmosis Units for water quality, (3) Rotary Screw Air Compressors (2) rated at 166 CFM and (1) rated at 215 CFM use for Control Air within the plant, and Electrical Distribution Systems. 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the powerhouse assets are operated in a safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible manner while satisfying the Campus utility and energy requirements.
  • Participate in company safety programs and policies to promote a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Performs inspections, water analysis, and troubleshooting, to optimized plant performance.
  • Monitoring of operating parameters and recording operating data, including production efficiencies, electrical usage, pressures, temperatures, vibration indications, alarms and other pertinent information related to the safe operation of the powerhouse equipment.
  • Operating Engineers will be required to promptly notify the Plant Manager / Assistant Plant Manager of any unusual, abnormal or potentially unsafe operating conditions and take appropriate action to mitigate any potentially unsafe condition or condition that if otherwise not corrected could result in out of specification system production.
  • Performs scheduled and un-scheduled plant maintenance to optimize plant availability and improve cost effectiveness.
  • Operation and routine maintenance associated with water treatment equipment. These activities will include the routine monitoring of water quality and the performance of routine maintenance of water treatment equipment.
  • The de-energization (lock-out/tag-out) of all equipment within the scope of responsibility pertaining to utility / powerhouse assets that is required to allow the safe performance of maintenance on such equipment.
  • Perform routine (planned maintenance) on all utility / powerhouse equipment, including predictive, preventive, and minor corrective maintenance. Operating Engineers will also be required to assist contractors with work that is beyond the capability of the Operating Engineer, including tasks such as Gas Turbine, Steam Turbine maintenance etc.   
  • The recording and documenting of all maintenance activities that are performed on utility / powerhouse equipment. This includes utilizing a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to electronically document information and historical data. 
  • Perform troubleshooting and correcting problems related to the proper monitoring, control and operation of utility / powerhouse equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area ensuring that the area is left in an unobstructed and safe condition following the completion of maintenance / repair tasks.
  • Perform work and conduct activities as directed by the Plant Manager and Assistant Plant Manager within their assigned area.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

A high school diploma or GED is required and at least four (4) years’ experience in utility / powerhouse operations.

 Special Job Characteristics

  • Works (8-Hour) days Monday-Friday unless needed for (12-Hour) Operator shift coverage.   
  • Must be available for call outs, scheduled overtime, weekend and holiday work.
  • Must be able to wear a respirator (this requires remaining clean-shaven)

Vision requirements for this position include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, along with depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Working Conditions

The employee performs job duties in a field office and powerhouse environment, with a loud noise levels.
