Job Summary

This is an entry level leadership position that will report to the Assistant Plant Manager and work closely with the Resource Recovery Specialist providing fuel yard management including receipt to storage of all woody biomass for use the facility.  In addition, this position will take a daily coordination role in ensuring ash disposal in conjunction with the ash management plan.  

The Scale House Supervisor will lead the daily scheduling of beneficial reuse for ash. The position holder will be expected to support the manager with the development of, and periodical updates to, the fuel and ash plans to ensure that transactions are consistent with the plans.   

Working closely with the site leadership, the position holder is expected to ensure fuel quality standards in the yard are in compliance with expectations by supporting fuel quality reviews, scale house supervision, and manage the wood blend in the stacker and yard to support operations.  This position is also responsible to ensure ash silo levels are managed to optimize trucking and disposal costs while meeting operational requirements for capacity.

The Scale House Supervisor, will be expected to comply with all DTE Energy safety processes, the DTE Code of Conduct and the Onsite Energy BU Administrative Guidelines. 

Key Accountabilities
  • Supervise O&M Technician I position; including training, development, scheduling and overtime management.
  • Ensure onsite fuel quality testing and sampling / reporting are compliant with regulations and the MPCC Fuel Management Plan.
  • Ensure execution of best practices in pile management to ensure fire prevention and regular inventory turns.
  • Manage fuel moisture sampling and data entry to ensure accurate payment on a Bone Dry Ton basis.
  • Ensure accurate entry of data into 3log software and perform analysis of fuel supply to ensure proper material tracking for both quality and cost. 
  • Support twice-monthly inspections and quality control assessments of fuel suppliers at their location in coordination with the Resource Recovery Specialist.
  • Manage fuel yard contractor for pile management and stack out blending at budget levels.
  • Act as a back-up to the Resource Recovery Specialist for vacation coverage and development.
  • Required Sampling and Audits as required.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements


  • Undergraduate degree (or currently pursuing with a completed associates degree) in applicable discipline, or 5-10 years equivalent and relevant professional experience is required;
  • The candidate should be familiar with various aspects of the agricultural practices, wood recycling/processing, and wood transportation industry.
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong relationship with wood suppliers, transporters, and recovery customers.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement and cost optimization activities is preferred.
  • Knowledge of power plant fuel management procedures and processes is preferred.
  • Experience managing waste recovery yards, fuel yards and knowledge of quality standards.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to analyze and communicate tasks, needs, activities, and follow-up actions to relevant stakeholders
  • Ability to take initiative and prioritize competing priorities.
  • Team player, ability to lead and/or work within cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to function and when necessary to influence others within a matrix organization in which functional and business leaders have equal authority within the organization and employees report to both a functional leader and a business leader.

The individual may also be exposed to chemicals and odors consistent with waste materials.  The individual may at times work near mechanical moving parts.  They may work in high, precarious areas, around fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, and extreme heat.
