Hybrid Role: This role is hybrid, with an established schedule of in-person work required at an assigned work location. Any remote work is expected to be performed from an employee’s primary residence, unless allowed (or prohibited) through the Company’s remote work guidelines.
Emergency Response: Yes – Must be available to perform a primary assignment in support of DTE’s emergency response to storms or other events that impact service to our customers.
Job Summary
Provides legal advice and recommendations regarding routine legal matters or with directions from senior-level attorneys on more complex matters. Conducts legal research, provides legal counsel, and helps develop recommendations. Represents interests of the Company in formal or informal legal proceedings, including federal, state, or local jurisdictions, or alternative dispute resolution processes. Span of control: 0; this is an individual contributor role.
Key Accountabilities
- Assists and supports various legal projects in an efficient and timely manner for assigned business units
- Conducts research on legal principles and precedents, including consulting with and supporting outside legal counsel
- Drafts and executes legal documents, including gathering relevant information using multiple sources and methods and shares findings with leadership
- Develops legal resolutions with business problems in one or more specialized areas of legal practice
- Provides legal guidance and work instruction to other professional, paraprofessional, and support staff
- Represents the company legally in job related workplace disputes or claims of employer wrongdoing (e.g., wrongful termination, contract disagreements, unemployment issues, and discrimination).
- Assists senior level attorneys in general corporate matters, including corporate organization, securities compliance, drafting transactional documents, license agreements, employment law, immigration law, data privacy, risk management asset-backed financing, and contract management.
- Identifies, evaluates, and provides recommendations on legal risk and mitigation initiatives to support internal business unit matters
- Provides drafts and recommendations on legal contracts, letters of agreement, policies and other documents related to a variety of trade, commercial, financial, and operational matters to senior level attorneys and leadership
- Supports the legal team on representing and advocating for the organization in litigation, arbitration, mediation or other disputes with courts, government agencies, or other legal authorities
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
- Graduate of accredited law school and admitted to the bar with 1 year of experience as a licensed attorney practicing law in any of the following areas: commercial transactions, federal and state regulatory law (energy), environmental, litigation, corporate finance and/or governance, and labor and employment law.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience working on transactional/corporate legal matters.
- Experience with procurement contracts and complex transactions (mergers/acquisitions or joint ventures), as well as other types of business transactions (e.g., real estate or construction).

- Initiates new ideas and approaches, challenges orthodox practices and approaches with reasonable and sound alternatives
