Hybrid Role: This role is hybrid, with an established schedule of in-person work required at an assigned work location. Any remote work is expected to be performed from an employee’s primary residence, unless allowed (or prohibited) through the Company’s remote work guidelines.
Emergency Response: Yes – Must be available to perform a primary assignment in support of DTE’s emergency response to storms or other events that impact service to our customers.
Job Summary
Provides legal advice and recommendations regarding routine legal matters. For more complex legal matters, supports the legal team and senior-level attorneys. Research applicable legal matters and provide counsel findings and recommendations. Represent the interests of the Company in any number of formal or informal legal proceedings including but not limited to federal, state or local judicial, or alternative dispute resolution processes.
Key Accountabilities
- Provides a variety of routine and general corporate and commercial legal advice on projects, issues, and improvements assigned to business unit customers.
- Researching, analyzing legal data, and interpreting proposed and existing laws, statutes, and regulations to ensure accurate advice is given to the organization on appropriate legal action to be taken.
- Consults with outside counsel to ensure regulations are being followed.
- Creates and executes legal documents by including relevant information using multiple sources and methods.
- Provides work guidance to other professionals and support staff to develop solutions to business problems, typically focusing on a specific legal practice area.
- Represents the company legally in job related workplace disputes or claims of employer wrongdoing (e.g., wrongful termination, contract disagreements, unemployment issues, and discrimination).
- Acts as advisor on legal issues involving the organization’s government and regulatory compliance.
- Performs litigation on the company’s behalf or coordinates litigation and other legal matters handled by outside counsel.
- Demonstrates experience in general corporate matters, including corporate organization, securities compliance, drafting transactional documents, license agreements, employment law, immigration law, data privacy, risk management asset-backed financing, and contract management.
- Identifies, evaluates, and addresses issues of legal risk to support internal business unit matters
- Supports the drafting, negotiating and approval of legal contracts, letters of agreement, policies and other documents related to a variety of trade, commercial, financial, and operational matters
- Supports the legal team on representing and advocating for the organization in litigation, arbitration, mediation or other disputes with courts, government agencies, or other legal authorities
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
Graduate of accredited law school and admitted to the bar with 5 years of experience as a licensed attorney practicing law in any of the following areas: commercial transactions, federal and state regulatory law (energy), environmental, litigation, corporate finance and/or governance, and labor and employment law.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working on transactional legal mattes
- Experience with procurment contracts and complex transactions (mergers/acquisitions or joint ventures), as well as other types of business transactions (e.g., real estate or construction)
- Experience working with renewable energy transactions

- Exhibits exceptional verbal and nonverbal communication, written and presentation skills.
- Utilizes analytic and problem-solving skills to identify key issues from a broad range of alternatives and recommend optimal solutions for various situations
- Collaborates with a team and/or matrix structure, supporting multiple clients, procedures and policy.
- Manages multiple demands from superiors, peers and subordinates in a positive and evenhanded fashion, displaying a calm demeanor under pressure.
- Prioritizes and manages multiple tasks, issues or projects that may include high-visibility initiatives and require innovation, teamwork and planning.
- Initiates new ideas and approaches, challenging orthodox practices and approaches with reasonable and sound alternatives.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, i.e. MSWord and Excel sufficient to apply them with minimal instruction or guidance.
