Job Summary
Location: Detroit, MI
Provides legal services across a high volume of commercial and transactional matters, owning them end-to-end on a lean, fast-moving team. Has a broad business perspective and applies this perspective to legal analysis and solutions to meet objectives. Works with significant autonomy and coordinates across business and legal functions to deliver results. May be called to represent the interests of the Company in matters including commercial contracts and transactions, business development, finance, litigation, renewable energy, and decarbonization.
The successful candidate will demonstrate an unwavering commitment to high performance, high integrity, and sound risk management. This individual exercises independent legal judgment, partners commercially with the business, and safeguards the Company's interests with discretion and rigor.
Key Accountabilities
- Independently manages a high volume of commercial contracts and transactions, reducing load across the legal function
- Owns and efficiently resolves increasingly complex and sensitive matters
- Researches legal issues, drafts and negotiates legal documents, and effectively manages outside counsel
- Provides work guidance to other professional, paraprofessional, or support staff to develop solutions to business problems
- Negotiates complex commercial transactions directly with counterparties
- Exercises independent legal judgment, advising business partners on complex issues and risk
- Works with minimum supervision and collaborates across all levels of the business
- Handles confidential and sensitive matters with discretion
- Performs all other related duties as assigned
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
- Graduate of accredited law school and admitted to the state bar of permanent residence within a reasonable time, with at least seven (7) years of legal experience.
- Ability to work in a team and/or matrix structure, supporting multiple clients, procedures, and policy
- Ability to cope with multiple demands from superiors, peers, and subordinates in a positive and even-handed fashion, displaying a calm demeanor under pressure
- Competent with prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, issues or projects that may include high-visibility initiatives and require innovation, teamwork, and planning
- Initiate new ideas and approaches, challenging orthodox practices and approaches with reasonable and sound alternatives
Other Qualifications
Preferred:
- Exhibits exceptional verbal and non-verbal communication, written and presentation skills
- Possesses analytic and problem-solving skills consistent with the ability to identify key issues from a broad range of alternatives and recommend optimal solutions for various situations
- Experience supporting M&A, due diligence, or corporation transactions
- Supply chain, procurement, or vendor contracting experience
- Experience drafting, structuring, and negotiating commercial energy transactions in renewable natural gas, renewable energy, decarbonization, or other energy-related business activities
- Comfortable evaluating and responsibly deploying AI and legal technology tools to improve efficiency while maintaining accuracy, confidentiality, and professional responsibility
