Hybrid Role: This role is hybrid, with an established schedule of in-person work required at an assigned work location. Any remote work is expected to be performed from an employee’s primary residence, unless allowed (or prohibited) through the Company’s remote work guidelines.
Emergency Response: Yes – Must be available to perform a primary assignment in support of DTE’s emergency response to storms or other events that impact service to our customers.
Job Summary
Leads the company’s digital factory by defining cloud strategy for automating, deploying, and operating cloud infrastructure and services. Oversees application development and hosting, spanning architecture, engineering, deployment, and operational management of cloud environments. Partners with product and platform teams to enable complex, cross‑business digital initiatives and provides guidance to less experienced engineers. This individual contributor role (span of control: 0) blends solution architecture and senior cloud engineering, combining strategic platform and solution design with hands‑on cloud operations and infrastructure automation. Operating at the intersection of cloud, data, applications, and platform strategy, the role translates business requirements into platform capabilities, sets technical direction, guides engineering teams, and ensures systems are scalable, secure, and efficient.
Key Accountabilities
- Leads development of standards and/or cloud vendor product selections for each infrastructure tower in coordination with traditional engineering and network teams
- Develops and implements cloud automation strategies for automating and deploying cloud infrastructure
- Oversees and manages development and operations (DevOps) automation, including set-up and configuration of continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) processes for digital factory products
- Configures and provisions next generation information technology (NGI) and physical stacks in private cloud environment, including rack-level design and other support activities
- Improves cloud product reliability, availability, maintainability, and cost/benefit impacts, including developing fault-tolerant tools to ensure robustness of the cloud infrastructure
- Oversees capacity across public and private cloud resource pools, including automating scale down/up of environments
- Provides guidance to less experienced cloud developers in optimizing and automating cloud engineering activities (e.g., real time migration, provisioning, and deployment)
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
- This is a multi-track base requirement job; education and experience requirements can be satisfied through one of the following three options:
- Bachelor’s degree and 6 years of experience in technology field, inclusive of 4 years with strategy development, architecture, design, and implementation of cloud initiatives leveraging agile and development and operations (DevOps) methodologies; OR
- Associate degree and 8 years of experience in technology field, inclusive of 4 years with strategy development, architecture, design, and implementation of cloud initiatives leveraging agile and development and operations (DevOps) methodologies; OR
- High school diploma or GED and 10 years of experience in technology field, inclusive of 4 years with strategy development, architecture, design, and implementation of cloud initiatives leveraging agile and development and operations (DevOps) methodologies
Other Qualifications
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.
- Lead cloud strategy, platform architecture, and solution design to deliver scalable, secure, and resilient cloud environments aligned with business objectives, enterprise standards, and technology strategy.
- Design, build, deploy, and operate public cloud infrastructure, including networking, private/public zones, and multi‑environment workloads, using infrastructure‑as‑code, automation, and standardized deployment patterns.
- Apply senior‑level cloud engineering expertise to improve provisioning efficiency, reliability, observability, security, and overall operational excellence across development, testing, and production environments.
- Partner with product, business, and engineering teams during discovery and delivery to translate business needs into actionable platform capabilities and technical requirements.
- Provide architectural leadership, technical guidance, and mentorship to engineering teams to ensure high‑quality, consistent implementation of platform components.
- Oversee cloud governance, cost optimization, and environment health while continuously evaluating emerging technologies and recommending platform enhancements that improve developer experience, performance, and security.
Other Requirements:
- Deep understanding of software development lifecycles and cloud economics, including knowledge of consumption-driven total cost of ownership (TCO)
- Ability to create and set up automated deployments (e.g., blue/green or red/black) to meet application operational requirements
- Advanced knowledge in infrastructure as code (e.g., DevOps, etc.)
- Advanced knowledge of security implications related to public and private cloud infrastructure design
- Advanced knowledge of network architectures suitable for different cloud topologies with familiarity with user expectations / operational level agreements (OLA) for cloud services
- Advanced knowledge of standard networking protocols and components (e.g., load balancing, etc.)
