Job Summary
Under the indirect & intermittent supervision of an area leader &/or work direction of a leader, works in the shop or field at all DTE Energy properties. As a member of a crew or alone, lays out, fabricates, assembles, welds, installs, or repairs sheet metal products such as all HVAC duct, panels, cabinets, machine guards, chutes, etc. Works from drawings, verbal instruction, etc., makes material take-off from the same. Assists in training & directing work of Sheet Metal Work Trainees/Apprentices.
Key Accountabilities
1. Lays out, fabricates, assembles, installs, alters, repairs & makes material take-offs from sheet metal products such as ventilating ducts, diffusers, dampers, mixing chambers & stacks, chutes, flashings, machine cabinets (doors, hinges, & locking devices), containers, louvers, strainers, racks, partitions, decking, siding, etc. Installs vendor equipment such as roof ventilators, air fans, blowers, etc. Fabricates & installs machine guards in accordance with OSHA standards. Works with all ferrous & nonferrous metals, fiberglass, plastics, etc.
2. Draws or develops patterns & shapes on template paper. Marking locations of bends, cuts, equipment mounting, holes, bevels, etc. to specified tolerances. Works from blueprint drawings sketches, sample pieces, templates, oral or written instructions, etc. Checks drawings with actual field or job conditions.
3. Figures &/or develops arcs, diameters, radius chords, geometric shapes, angles, joining of various sizes & shapes of sheet metal products, from scale drawings containing only essential detail such as widths, depths, offsets, diameters, overall lengths or location of installation. Takes field measurements & makes designs, sketches for layout & fabrication of sheet metal, fiberglass & plastic installation, etc.
4. Sets up, fits, rivets, bolts, spot welds, arc welds, solders, locks, cements & heat seals sheet metal,
fiberglass & plastic parts to form complete assemblies.
5. Fabricates sheet metal components such as elbows, compound offsets, tapering elbow, square to rounds, cabinets, roof flanges, rain shields & caps, skylights, stainless steel sinks, etc.
6. Fabricates special purpose sheet metal products, prototypes, e.g., display & engineering model
parts, coal samplers, brackets, exterior flood lighting fixtures, & equipment guards.
7. Operates water jet, power bending brake, power driven punches, rolls, welding machines, plasma arc, rotary & squaring shears, drill presses, hand-operated bending brake, rolls, semi-automatic metal cutter, semi-automatic punch, etc. Inputs information for CNC controllers. Uses various hand tools and company equipment.
8. Prepares parts for welding & painting by grinding, assembling, sanding & filing, etc. Performs uncertified arc welding both in the shop & in the field as required for fabrication & installation of sheet metal.
9. Performs all operations of computer operated water jet cutting system using CAD/CAM. Designs parts & fittings. Performs daily maintenance as necessary on water jet.
10. Operates fork lifts, bridge crane pendant, vacuum lifter, hydraulic tables & other equipment necessary in the performance of the sheet metal trade, performs basic rigging, qualified to operate various Aerial Work Platforms, ladders & scaffolding.
11. Must be qualified & understand Red Tag Protection under PPO-77.
Qualifications
- Must have a High School diploma or GED equivalent
- Must be accredited Sheet Metal Journeyman(preferred) or 8 years of related experience
- Must be able to stand for long periods, crawl, climb high ladders and work in confined spaces
- Must communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Must meet company standard requirements
- Must have a valid driver's license and meet Company driving standards
