Job Summary

Addresses technical tax and accounting issues through utilizing specialized skills and recommends solutions.  Develops and executes tax strategies to reduce the state tax burden and risk. Ensures that state tax planning initiatives are properly incorporated into the tax compliance process and financial statements.  Assists in driving process improvement opportunities for tax function.  Span of control: this is an individual contributor role.

 

Key Accountabilities

  • Facilitates the state tax planning process and implements short and long-term tax savings strategies through collaboration.
  • Assists with the state income tax planning function, including identification of proper entity types, favorable structures and anticipated cash and effective tax rate impact.
  • Monitors state income tax legislation and provides advice on tax issues.
  • Conducts research of applicable tax laws, resolves complex tax issues and develops best practices for implementation.
  • Partners with planning function to provide support and development of new processes.
  • Mentors others regarding complex state income tax concepts and procedures, documentation and presentation requirements, research and writing techniques, business transactions, and tax minimization and audit defense strategy.
  • Analyzes and reviews information requests and collaborates in the resolution of audit issues.
  • Reviews state income tax filings and develops tax improvements to minimize tax liability.
  • Works with business unit finance and corporate accounting on state income tax and accounting issues.
  • Manages vendor relationships by identifying consultants for projects, developing scope and fees  and managing project deliverables.

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements

Minimum: MBA, Master of Science in Taxation (MST) or law degree with 7 years of broad corporate state income tax experience (corporate tax department, law firm or public accounting), handling complex multi-state tax issues and analysis.

  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills coupled with the ability to use these skills to make quality decisions in a timely manner
  • Advanced knowledge of the fundamentals of accounting based on defined accounting rules (e.g. US GAAP, ASC 740), consolidated tax return regulations, and multi state tax concepts
  • Ability to communicate complex tax issues and options to senior executive financial and operating management allowing for effective decision making.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work in a deadline driven environment.
  • Proficient with Excel, Word and PowerPoint
