Job Summary

Principal level engineer responsible for planning and conducting engineering activities. Requires the use of advanced techniques and the application of theories, precepts, practice and disciplines, including practical field experience. Incumbents have the responsibility and authority to make decisions on engineering problems and methods applicable to the resolution of important issues. Participates on and leads teams of employees, technicians, engineers and other personnel.

Key Accountabilities
  • Develop, coordinate and direct projects or field engineering assignments with complex features
  • Performs assigned or initiates engineering studies, propose solutions to engineering-related problems & develops, analyze data to support improvement programs, techniques & solutions
  • Interfaces with outside departments, vendors, suppliers & reliability entities
  • Develop, conduct and communicate well both verbally and in writing in presentations of engineering projects to all levels of management and external parties (contractors, customers, etc.), creates accurate and punctual reports, delivers and shares information and ideas with others, has good listening skills
  • Plan and manage group workflow to meet budgets and schedules
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance/direction to Staff and operate as SME to support compliance training, pipeline compliance requests and work with internal/external stakeholders and develop DTE Gas Standards as well as prepare and manage state and federal regulator audits and inspections including developing agency response, meeting submission deadlines, resolving non-compliances through proven methodologies with a focus on mitigative measures
  • Collaborate with business units (e.g. GIS, Drug and Alcohol Testing, One-Call, Operator Qualification, TIMP, DIMP, Storage, Public Awareness, Damage Prevention, Emergency Response, Operations, Technical Training, Control Room, Engineering, Construction Teams, Codes Staff, etc.) on compliance issues and assist on special projects to ensure pipeline safety initiatives are incorporated to align with the Pipeline Safety Management System. Provide general support to the internal Stakeholder with focus on continuous improvement of systems, documentation practices with a focus on consistency and standardization
  • Provide regulatory updates to DTE Gas from PHMSA, MPSC, NTSB, etc, participate in industry workshops and manage on-call request and travel internally/externally to Stakeholder meetings
  • Demonstrated ability to research, compile, prepare studies, responses to proposed changes in regulations, recommendations, policies, procedures, and correspondence
  • Experience reading and interpreting applicable governmental regulations pertaining to state and federal-regulated intrasrate and interstate pipelines; company and/or industry publications related to pipeline reporting compliance; researching, identifying, evaluating and prioritizing problems or situations and coordinating appropriate actions or responses
  • Review documents, prepare checklists, audit agendas, conduct pre and post audits and prepare final reports
  • Conduct incident investigations and root cause analyses
  • Project Management Skills - ability to manage projects, develop efforts and collaborate effectively to obtain positive results
  • Makes decisions systematically and under pressure, build consensus, make difficult/unpopular decisions and consider impact of decisions
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology and a minimum of 6 years of job relevant experience
Other Qualifications

Preferred

  • Master's Degree in Engineering or job relevant discipline

Other Requirements

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, primarily Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access as well as Visio, Power BI and SharePoint
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong time management, project management, prioritization, and organization skills
  • Proficient communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Quality Assurance or Quality Management System experience

Desired Qualifications:

  • API 1169 Certification
  • ANST Level II MT, PT and/or UT
  • AWS or AISC Certification, API 1104
  • Demonstrate welding experience
  • NACE Certification (CP Level 1-4, Coating Inspector Level 1-3)
  • Fusing Welding
  • Incident Investigation
  • Certified Auditor Training
  • Understanding of 49 CFR Part 191 and 192 or experience in specific areas of pipeline safety compliance
