Plant Mechanic

Location:          Staten Island, New York

General Summary

This position is responsible for maintaining a 35-year old landfill gas to renewable natural gas plant owned by the Department of Sanitation of New York and operated by DTE Biomass Energy.  This site takes landfill gas from the Staten Island Landfill and strips carbon dioxide out of the gas stream, creating a pure natural gas product.  The natural gas is compressed and injected into a natural gas pipeline for use as vehicle fuel.

This position will report to the Facility Manager.

Mission

To safely operate and maintain a landfill gas to renewable natural gas processing facility in a manner which meets environmental regulations while optimizing the financial results of the project and customer satisfaction. 

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Perform all types of work involved with the maintenance, operation, inspection of the landfill gas purification facility 
  • Complete routine and non-routine maintenance, as directed
  • Document maintenance schedules and activities
  • Maximize on-line performance and gas production
  • Perform duties in accordance with the safety rules, regulations and practices and report unsafe conditions and practices

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Willing to respond to off-hours trouble calls
  • Ability to replace maintain and replace valves, instrumentation, compressor parts, engine parts, and other industrial equipment
  • Minimum of two-year degree and five years of satisfactory work experience as a Plant Mechanic or 10 years of experience performing mechanical maintenance in an industrial environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and instrument control systems
  • Must be self-motivated
  • Must demonstrate familiarity with Company safety rules and practices

To properly perform the integral functions of this job, the employee is routinely required to reach with hands or arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, feel and smell. The employee must be able to walk on shallow and steep slopes, sometimes in inclement weather. Frequently the employee will be required to stand, walk, and sit. It is crucial to the outcome of job tasks that the employee can use hands and fingers to handle and manipulate object as well as to talk and hear. 

The employee in this classification will be required to frequently lift objects of up to 25 pounds in weight. Occasionally, the employee must lift or move objects of up to 50 pounds in weight. 

Vision requirements for this position include close, distance and peripheral vision, along with depth perception. 

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions, and extreme cold and/or heat. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and/or machinery. The noise level in the work environment is moderate. Most work is within the vicinity of a municipal solid waste disposal facility. Employee will routinely operate a motor vehicle.

Employee will be required to respond to call-outs (plant upset conditions) within one hour during other than normal business hours and work unscheduled overtime.
