Emergency Response: Yes – Must be available to perform a primary assignment in support of DTE’s emergency response to storms or other events that impact service to our customers.

Job Summary

  • Oversees, coordinates and conducts the maintenance and site improvements on the Corporation's electric generating peaking unit fleet, consisting of multiple (>75) generating units installed across multiple sites throughout the Corporation's service area with a net capacity of 1371 MW. These are typically oil, natural gas, or other non-steam & non-hydraulic fossil fuel-fired turbine units that fulfill peak power requirements on demand. Applies technical expertise in the areas of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and analog and computer control systems associated with diverse equip-ment that comprise the Corporation's peaker power generation fleet and associated auxiliary systems. Span of control=0; this is an individual contributor job, although incumbents may mentor, provide guidance and direction, or act in a subject matter expert capacity for less experienced staff and/or contractor personnel; may provide input in performance evaluations, but does not supervise.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develops, manages, coordinates and implements maintenance (predictive, preventative and periodic) programs associated with the combustion turbine, jet and diesel prime mover peaker fleet.
  • Leads, coordinates, conducts and implements problem-solving activities; develops corrective action plans and programs with the objective of reducing operating & maintenance (O&M) costs, and maximizing peaker unit availability.
  • Maintains a safe and environmentally secure work environment; performs the duties of Protection Leader as required.
  • Performs as Site and/or Project Manager for installation and startup of new or modified systems.
  • Provides technical expertise and direction to other work groups or contractors pertaining to the maintenance, operation and repair of mechanical, electrical, control and auxiliary systems associated with peaking unit equipment.
  • May lead projects and/or project teams (including assigning work, reviewing progress and evaluat-ing results), mentor, provide guidance and technical direction to less experienced technical and support staff (but is not responsible for supervising anyone).
  • Independently recognizes project resource requirements, internally and externally, and brings necessary resources to bear to accomplish required tasks

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements

  • This is a dualtrack base requirement job; education & experience requirements can be satisfied through one of the following options:
    • High school degree or GED, & 10+ years of power plant experience, including electrical, control systems, mechanical or instrumentation technology operations
    • Associate degree in electrical, control systems or electrical trades technology, or other appropriate technology/engineering discipline, or certificate in turbine / power technology from a duly accredited program, & 4+ years of relevant power plant or industrial equipmentrelated experience.

Other Qualifications

Preferred

  • Gas and/or steam turbine experience
  • Associate degree or higher in related field

 

Other Requirements

  • Must maintain North American Electrical Reliability Corporation Critical Infrastructure Protection (NERCCIP) clearance; have the physical capacity to work in a power plant environment (e.g climb stairs, work in hot confined environments, and pass security screening & drug tests.
  • Knowledge of / familiarity with: generators, electrical switchgear and controls, heavy industrial prime movers and associated control such as combustion turbines, jets and/or large diesel engines, and auxiliary support systems.
  • Ability to travel & report for work at different locations (typically within the Corporation's service area); incumbents are responsible for their own transportation.
  • Proficient verbal, written and presentation skills; communicates clearly, with credibility and confidence.
  • Intermediate-to-advanced analytical and project management skills.
  • Analytical & problem solving skills consistent with the ability to identify key issues from a broad range of alternatives, and recommend optimal solutions for various situations.
  • Ability to develop / coordinate cross-functional work groups and projects, yielding optimal outcomes.
  • Broad understanding of power generation, transmission, distribution and regional power dispatch issues.
  • Flexibility & the ability to work with shifting priorities; embrace new/evolving responsibilities.
  • Balances multiple demands from superiors, and/or subordinates & peers in a positive and even-handed fashion; displays a calm demeanor under pressure.
  • Initiates new ideas and approaches; challenges prevailing practices & approaches with reasonably sound alternatives.
